Understanding Periodontal Disease (Gum Disease)

How Gum Disease Develops
Stage 1: Plaque Buildup
Bacteria form a sticky film on teeth along and below the gumline.
Stage 2: Tartar Formation
Without proper removal, plaque hardens into tartar (calculus) that can't be removed by brushing alone.
Stage 3: Gingivitis
Gums become red, swollen, and bleed easily. At this stage, gum disease is often reversible with improved oral hygiene and professional care.
Stage 4: Periodontitis
Untreated gingivitis progresses to advanced gum disease. Infection spreads deeper, causing gum recession, bone loss, persistent bad breath, loose teeth, and potential tooth loss.
Warning Signs of Gum Disease
Many patients are surprised to learn they have periodontal disease because early stages often don't cause pain. Watch for these symptoms:
- Red, swollen, or tender gums
- Bleeding when brushing or flossing
- Persistent bad breath
- Receding gums or teeth appearing longer
- Loose or shifting teeth
- Pain when chewing
- Sensitive teeth
- Pus between teeth and gums
Don't ignore these warning signs. Regular dental visits allow Dr. LaPointe to detect and treat gum disease before serious damage occurs.
Scaling & Root Planing: Deep Cleaning Treatment
What Is Scaling & Root Planing?
This gentle deep-cleaning procedure goes beyond routine cleaning to remove harmful bacteria from below the gumline; areas that regular brushing and professional cleanings can't reach.
- Scaling
Careful removal of plaque and tartar from below the gumline and from tooth root surfaces. - Root Planing
Smoothing of tooth roots to help gums heal and reattach more comfortably to teeth, making it easier to maintain oral health.
What to Expect During Treatment

Customized Treatment | Depending on your individual needs, treatment may be completed in one or more visits.

After Scaling & Root Planing
Following treatment, most patients experience:
- Reduced gum inflammation and bleeding
- Fresher breath
- Healthier pink gum tissue
- Improved ability to maintain oral hygiene
Dr. LaPointe will recommend a customized maintenance schedule, often cleanings every 3-4 months, to help you maintain healthy gums and prevent disease progression.
